OUR LADY OF LOURDES STAINED
CLASS
LOCATION:
West transept, upper panel.
THEME:
This panel shows St. Joseph, Mary Mother of God, and St. John
the Baptist.
- left: The lily springing from a staff is the
symbol of St. Joseph. According to legend, the high priest Zechariah
told Mary in a revelation that he was instructed by an angel
to bring together all the marriageable men and have each one
leave his staff in the temple overnight. The Lord's choice of
husband for Mary would be revealed through a sign. In the morning,
the staff of Joseph the carpenter was found blossomed, while
staffs of the others were barren.
- center: Mary is shown here as Queen of Heaven,
in all her glory and splendor with the child Jesus.
- right: John is pointing his staff, just as
in the gospels, as the Messiah's herald, he points the ways to
Christ. On the staff is a banner which reads: ECCE, AGNUS DEI,
latin for BEHOLD, THE LAMB OF GOD. In this panel, John wears
a camel's hair shirt, as mentioned in the Gospels.
INSCRIPTION: Donated by the family of J.B. Towner.
